WORKSHOP

Today was our shooting seminar. It was a beautiful day, and perfect for a few hour shooting at Brandywine Battlefield, some tasty sandwiches, Photoshop and Lightroom instruction, and new things for everyone to learn. Here's one of my images. I didn't shoot too much myself, but couldn't resist just a few.
Thanks to everyone who attended.

SHENG FAMILY

So...... I was sick most of the weekend, and tried my best not to leave the couch, but alas I had a portrait session planned for Saturday morning. I am pretty sure my contagious period was well past, so I took some ibuprofen and did my best not to cough on the family I was shooting. I don't think there were any fatalities except the squeeky toy I was holding for a few minutes while trying to get the attention of the youngest little guy.
My tendency is to gravitate towards the shots that happen between the posed shots. Much more telling I think. If this were my family, I would want the straight forward portrait, but those in between laughs are what I would be looking at over and over again.

HAPPY

Today my daughter got to take the day off school and spend the day with me. You wouldn't know from this picture, but the reason for the day off was so that she could get blood drawn. She has been having regular stomach aches, and we are trying to get to the bottom of it. She is such a good sport, and basically laughed all the way through 3 vials of blood.

PHILADELPHIA'S FINEST

We stayed in a hotel downtown after our annual Chinese New year celebration. Each year we beg my parents to watch the younger kids, leave the house to the older kids, and enjoy a feast with some good friends who we sometimes only see this one time every year (see previous day's lobster platter!). Without children to worry about, or the dog, or something in the house breaking, or work, or emails, we have the luxury of sleeping in this one day. Of course the building next to the hotel has to catch on fire at 7:00 in the morning. We tried hard to ignore the many sirens, but for fear of the possibility of the building we were in being on fire, I had to get up and see what was happening. At first it just looked like chimney smoke, but soon the smoke was coming out windows and lingering in the alleys. I took a few pictures and tried to go back to sleep, to no avail. Oh well. It looked like the fire got put out without too much damage, and we got an earlier start to our day than we planned.

OCT. 8, 1948

I thought I had found all of the interesting things in my basement already. Today I found tucked in a corner, wrapped around one of the heater pipes, and tied with rope, an extremely brittle newspaper from 1949 (I think). I wanted to see more of the paper, and figure out why it was tied to the pipe. but when i touched it, it just began to crumble. It was probably there to keep the pipes from rattling, but there are many stories, and hopes of hidden treasure which could surround an ethereal clue such as this.
